Wondering how to lock that precious Roofnest Roof Top Tent of yours?  Look no further, this post will explain the best ways to lock your Roofnest rooftop tent.

Why lock your tent?

Unfortunately, we live in a time where break in’s, vandalism, and theft are all too common.  Depending on your situation, occasions may come up where you’d want to lock your Roofnest rooftop tent (or any hardshell tent).  An extra layer of security is never a bad thing, which is why we recommend investing in some method to protect your tent. Here’s 4 different methods you can use for added protection.

Locking methods we use

KanuLock Straps

KanuLock Straps are similar to ratchet straps, yet they contain an embedded stainless steel reinforcement wire, making them difficult to cut.  These locking straps are sold in a set of 2 and come with a key.  Many users strap these around their rooftop tent, ensuring nobody will pop it open while you’re away. You can also run the strap through the crossbars to secure the tent to your vehicle.  Be sure to get the correct size…the Roofnest Sparrow uses the 11ft. cam straps and the Roofnest Eagle size uses the 13 footers.

Tri-Groove Security Nuts

I’ve read forum posts before where someone simply unscrewed their rooftop tent from their vehicle in the middle of the night.  What a nightmare that would be.  These nuts will make sure that doesn’t happen and will add an extra layer of security. Tri-Groove security nuts use this special tool to take the nuts on/off, which most people don’t have laying around.  Replace your standard nuts with these and enjoy the extra piece of mind.

Lock your roof rack

Is your roof rack locked to your vehicle?  If the answer is no, that means your roof top tent isn’t secure either.  We’d recommend taking this extra step and purchasing a set of crossbars with a locking mechanism. We picked up the Yakima Timberline Towers and Locking Mechanism to add extra security to our set up.

Home Owners or Car Insurance

Contact your home owners, renters, or car insurance associate to make sure you are covered. If you’re not, you may be able to add additional coverage for just a few dollars a year. This extra step is worth it just incase anything would happen to your precious home away from home.

Doing something to protect your valuables is better than doing nothing.  Consider one of the options above and made the peace of mind that your rooftop tent is safe in sound.  Which method are you going to use?  Comment below and let us know!

Thanks for this post. I just installed my Sparrow Eye onto my Subaru Forrester and the thought of theft immediately came up. In Seattle, car theft/parts theft has become and epidemic. I wish Roofnest would have thought about this but your info was very helpful

Yep, also in Seattle area. Crazy world we are living in…sad we have to think like that. Cheers!
